Hi!,
Indeed, I was saddened by the news on the demise of 昌興 through 茂輝 n 日剛. I understand the sadness and grieve felt by his loved ones and our folks as I was also just recovering from the bereavement on the passing of my mother-in-law in late January.

Your massage below sounds like an "Eulogy" of which various mentioned "activities" resonate my frail memory on the reminiscence of our life in 1960+ --- "Those were the days". With this, it prompts me to share with you my side of memory.

To me, 昌興 was a jovial, affable and helpful friend. We always cracked jokes, made fun between us. But he was not one of my cliques (I had several cliques then with varied interest). I remembered him as a good sprinter who ran 100 meters under 12 minutes (it was a great achievement then) and had been together during the scouting session. I was invited to his house like U a number of time, yes, I could remember the massage parlour which was a trade mark then.

Camping: I remembered we always bicycled to camp at rubber plantations off Skudai Road etc and even Pasir Ris (Singapore). Those were the joyous scouting days. I remembered 昌興 were with us most of the times. But, I was unable to racall the incident of tiger phobia --- I could only recall the incident of wild boar phobia. For that, all of us could not sleep in peace but to "chitchat" in fear throughout the night.

Sea venture: I did not have the chance to do boating with him then. But would like to share some of my good memory, ie other interesting activities with my clique (茂輝 was one of them) at Jalan Stulang Laut. One day, we went to the end of Jalan Stulang Laut (ie the then bus terminal) where there were beaches, narrow estuary (or rather a small tributary of estuary) and ventured/waded into the water to try to catch some sea creatures for fun. We caught pelagic (flower, swimming) crabs etc with a primitive method (so raw and naive) through a simple sensory feeling of the movement of crab under the water with our feet and thereafter harvested them by hands. Not to mentioned the many exciting moments - pinched by the pincers of the crabs on the feet/hands, the touching on the unknown sea animals, the yelling and shouting filled up our days. But we never talked about crocodiles then --- so ignorance and naive. Besides, catching crabs, we also ventured into plucking green mussel (Perna viridis), from the concrete moors off the jetty near New HongKong Restaurant. The joy of being together with the clique and consumed the sumptuous mussel still live in my memory and I will always treasure them (those were the days).

Cheers and good day,
浩明

各位同學:
我先用英文,寫中文比較慢。
It is very sad that 昌興 passed away. I was told by my sister-in-law, also his sister-in-law, that he made it through Chinese New Year. At least, it’s some joy for the family.
I am trying to get some old pictures from 茂輝 to post on our website.

In high school, 昌興 and I played together a lot because we both were boy scouts. Some of you may remember his house was very close to the school. Other classmates and I could always drop by his house after school if we didn’t have time to go home. Of course, we were treated with lunch from his Mom. Do you remember their family had another house rented as a massage parlor on the same lot?

We played at the seaside in front of the high school after school. I remember onetime, he and I rode a sampan and went into some inner river. It’s a swamp there and very quiet that we felt scared that some crocodile might appear.

Another time, he and I went to camp a few miles outside of J.B. as boy scouts. We spent a night there and the surrounding was totally dark. Actually it’s very scary that we were thinking snakes, some animal or a tiger, not sure there was tiger over there at that time, might attack us during our sleep. The camp fire went out fast so we spread some sulfur around our tent. It’s not a comfortable night.

Re-post from last year's emails

Dear Friends,
Greetings! I'm presently in California.. My husband did fwd all the emails to me.

I, too, was sadden by the demise of the late classmate, Chong Seng. I remember him being a very jovial, gentle and friendly person... Please do convey my condolences to his family.

It was actually a very "mixed" feeling day for me on the day of his cremation. Sun Feb 1, 12pm JB time was Sat. Jan 31, 8pm California time and our daughter just gave birth to a baby girl that morning....

Life is fragile. Time to spend with families and loved ones is important. I recently read a book that sells 12 millions copies, "Tuesday with Morrie" by Mitch Albom about a young man and his old dying professor...I strongly recommend it! Another good place is Ecclesiastes 3 in the Bible, "..To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven...."

I myself have learned NOT to take things for granted. And certainly not our body and health at our age. I was always traveling and running around until last year, I discovered I had Spondylolithesis, something to do with my spinal L4-L5 and so I had to have spinal fusion surgery. I was on bed rest for more than 3 long months! Thank God I'm almost fully recovered.

I should be heading back to S'pore sometime in March. I hope to be able to catch some of the gatherings our classmates have or plan to have, to meet up with you good old friends. Please do keep me informed?

As you might have noticed, I'm using ***@yahoo.com to email. This is a separate email add I use whenever I travel alone so I don't mess up my husband's emails. But he always fwd me all my emails, so continue to use ***@singnet.com.sg or both.

Be of good cheer! Life is good and we're at our GOLDEN AGE!
